After coming back from Malaysia and having played with streaming I was so keen to get home and do it as well. Until I came back and actually tried. More on that later.
I discovered an entire world of crap upon my return. The first being I had forgotten how often my pc disconnected from the WoW servers. After moving my pc around the entire house and doing isolation testing we came to the conclusion our network cards are crap. But also, we really prefer a wired connection for gaming.
So we tried power-line adaptors on the suggestion of friends. and they worked initially but whoever designed them was a twat. They are too big to have in a normal double adaptor wall plate and be able to use the second power point and you can’t plug them into a powerboard. So…in our house we have 1 power plate in each room (yes shitty design we know). We could plug the adaptor in and then nothing else. Just stupid.
At $130 (260) per set of adaptors and me needing one as well, we decided we may as well just spend the money and get someone in to add points (ethernet or telephone) upstairs.
My kitchen being dismantled by the cabling guy.
Drew trying to help the cable man find the point upstairs which he can break though and feed cable, and finally our finished port upstairs with our modem now plugged in and computers all wired up.
In amongst all this discussion about ports and connections I discovered that ADSL technology is what causes the issue for streaming. It physically can’t get more than 1Mbps upload. What this means is I can stream at like…480 with particular settings and you can see most of what is happening but it will never be like it was in Malaysia.
I was devastated. Thus began the speed tests in the house. This is our ADSL 2 service.
I can’t even begin to explain how crap that is. This following test however is the 4G connection we have.
Both tests were done in my lounge room, on my iphone about 2 minutes apart and in the evening peak time. So I am wondering how well I can play and stream on the 4G connection instead of using my ADSL. I preface that by saying I have 160GB shared data on my mobile plan which I can utilise and I am not sure I would use that much by streaming a couple of raids or mythic runs a week? I have to test it out. But I just haven’t set it up and bothered fiddling with getting it happening.
Why don’t we have NBN you say? Because I won’t have it until possibly 2020. Unless we sell the house and just move to a place that has it already installed and working…<hrmmmm> there is an idea. Do I want to go through the stress again just so I can stream? We are in the one tiny area not covered by our neighbourhood. I kid you not.
Does anyone stream on 4G? Does it cause issues? Would you be willing to give it a shot with the speeds above?
