Topic 43 – Why do you choose the games you do?

Z and Cinder have gone on holidays and left us with a few topics to keep us entertained and instead of posting I just sort of…didn’t!!  But…here we go – I am doing the first one!!

I am also still deciding if I am allowed to continue Intpipmo given I only did one post….lol I failed on that front I think :p But hey…tis my blog I can back date and pretend they were done in November right?  RIGHT??!!?

Back to this topic though. The first game I ever got hooked on was Ragnarok – I have mentioned it previously I am sure.

Ragnarok 1992

It was an RPG game in the 90’s my brother and I played non-stop on the one computer we had. I would sit and watch him play so I knew how to when it was my turn.  It was about this time I started reading about magic and wizards (Thanks Magician by Feist) and so began my love of RPG – but I had no idea what that meant as a genre until much later.

I was without a computer or gaming for a few years and the next game I was hooked on was Pharaoh (thanks Sierra games) and thus began my love and adoration of City building games.

To  say obsessed would be an understatement, if anyone remembers the pain of this game and building some of the huge pyramids you will understand leaving the game running overnight in the hopes that your entire city wasn’t a burnt husk when you returned.  My enjoyment of city building still exists today and I have played a fair chunk of them but none of them had the same enjoyment for me as this one game (which I have on my pc now and sometimes pull out for an hour two).

I love city building because it is a puzzle and needs to be done well for it to work, the AI in older games was very unforgiving and if you stuffed it up you knew….they made sure you knew.  I also really enjoyed the games with historical significance – who doesn’t want to build a pyramid and be a pharaoh?  I loved Zeus as well as the mythological aspects in the games were enjoyable. I would love that is Aztec/Mayan based with the same style as Pharaoh or even a Pacific Islander one with you needing to see up small colonies on islands with different but similar cultures.  <Swoon>

Then I found out about MMO’s. Guild Wars was my first.

Guild Wars 2004

It was amazing to me that I could be a magic hurling character in a world like the books I was an avid reader of.  It made the worlds in my imagination real for me; I could see and interact with them.  That was until WoW came along in the form of a birthday present by a great friend.   I have tried a few MMO’s since and the only other one that was really engaging initially was Star Wars but WoW kept pulling me back for the graphic style, the lore, the story, the people and the dragons.

MMO’s are my favourite because of the team you play with. You get to work together, have a laugh with other people who want to be shapeshifting fire hurling agents of good (or chaos…looking at you SP’s and Locks) and you get to have dragons as pets and ride them.  What else can you possibly need? I love that other people enjoy high fantasy (…maybe not as much as me…in fact maybe they don’t even think of it like that?) and it sends me back to my days reading books like Lord of the Rings and the Belgariad…I can pretend I am a character in those novels and feel part of something bigger.

Shared Topic 40: Getting to know you

Oh, I am likely to read all these ones!! I love finding out about the people behind the blogs!

The current topic from Z and Cinder is as follows:

This lovely list of questions has been floating around twitter a lot recently, and we thought it would be a great topic challenge for everyone to get to know each other a little better. There are quite a few questions, so if you don’t want to do them all you don’t have to.

For those who prefer not to talk about themselves so personally on the internet (or if you would like an extra challenge!), our challenge to you is to answer these questions on behalf of your main toon.

So here we go!!

How do you drink your tea? White with one sugar

Favourite dessert? Cheesecake – any of them.

Favourite season and why? Autumn, my birthday and I love the browns of the leaves.

What cheers you up? Cute animal pictures, WoW, dash cam videos ( I love the swearing), returning military surprise videos.

Dogs or cats? Both – honestly I would have both for various reasons.

What is you dream holiday? Scotland/Europe

How many kids do you want? 0-1

Favourite weather? Rain/Storm

What would your last meal be? Takoyaki

You can spend 24 hours anywhere, any year, where do you choose? Fall of the Berlin Wall – November 1989

If you were a ghost, who or where would you haunt? I wouldn’t want to be haunt – I watch Supernatural – I would rather move on.

What is your family ancestry? Mum Kiwi and Dad Lebanese. I am dual citizen automatically for NZ and I can request it for Lebanon if I want.

What scares you? Spiders.

What are you most grateful for? My husband.

Dream job? Running an occult/geek store/cafe/space or travelling the world non stop and making money with blogging/photography.

Do you believe in aliens? Yes – we cannot be the only life that has managed to develop in the millions of years of the world.

Favourite Sport? Ice hockey

How do you relax after a long day? WoW or Netflix

If you could meet one historical figure, who would you choose and why? I have no idea. We don’t learn from our past so I am not sure why I would want to go backwards.

If you had to be a teacher, what subject would you teach? Life Skills – how to do a resume, attend interviews, understand taxes, open bank accounts, save money, address letters/envelopes, cook (meal plan/prep), laundry etc.

Describe your perfect date.  Warcraft and Chill with rum and coke and cheesecake.

Describe yourself in a sentence.  I am all the things people should not be.

Who makes you laugh the most? My hubby.

What Superpower would you choose? Teleportation so I could be anywhere in an instant (including places which contain money *grin*).

Favourite animal? Dragons – no one said they couldn’t be mythical!! Real one would probably be tigers.

Biggest accomplishment? I have stayed drug/cigarette/suicide attempt free for almost 15 years.

There you go – I think I answered them all, what about you guys, comment with your answers and check out some of the other posts on this topic as well.

Topic 38: How do you level in Battle for Azeroth?

Z and Cinder bring us another interesting topic this week which you can find here.

Do you go about things your own way, taking quests as they come? Do you focus on just the main storyline? Do you go as fast as you can to get to maximum level, story be damned? Or are you the type of person who needs to clear every single quest from the map? Horde first, or Alliance? And in particular, have you changed anything about the way you level in Battle for Azeroth? If so, why?

I love levelling. Part of what I love about the game is the quests. The stories, the jokes in the quest text.  It makes it enjoyable for me and I could, if I am being truly honest, just spend the rest of my days doing levelling quests.  I don’t like questing with no reward – just doing it for money or rep. That is boring as heck.  I do wonder if a never ending levelling experience would really be that great.  Do I enjoy it because it does end?

Since BC, Moryrt and I have levelled together.  We take leave, we spend every minute online levelling and doing things together. It makes killing easier and ensures faster completion (in most cases) of farming quests.  I like to read everything the first time round so I can ignore them on the next toon and just whizz through.  I am a fast reader though and it can seem like i am not reading the text at the time.  Thank god the map has little blue circles for where you need to be or I might kill some of the people I have levelled with over the years who just get the quest and immediately ask what they need to do!  LOL

Since flying became tied to the loremaster and exploration achievements we don’t leave a zone until we have those complete and we ignore any other side quests until  we see that golden achievement flare.  At max level we come back for the extra cash and do side quests etc. It is simple but effective and ensures we are getting through the Pathfinder things.

I always levelled my mage first, this has been the very first xpac I haven’t. I levelled my druid first and I feel amazingly guilty about it.  I have started my mage but time factors will mean she takes a while to get done I think.  I had hoped to spend my weeks leave doing that but other things have kept me out of the game more than in.  You could say I am super annoyed about that in general.

Voila max level ding, we dance then start the long slog to heroics, gearing, raiding, world quests and whatever else Blizzard has changed about the game 🙂

Topic 37: First Impressions: Battle For Azeroth in Pictures

I realised I forgot to add what this post was about – like a twit 🙂  Z and Cinder’s blog challenge for those wondering!!  Here is the link to their post request!

First impressions count and a new expansion brings a host of new zones to explore and new NPCs to meet.  Come and share your first impressions or favourite locations you find over the first fortnight of playing by showing us your favourite 5 (or more if you can’t choose) screenshots.

First impressions.  Gorgeous. Lovely. Emotive. Wild. Strong.

I haven’t been all that far, but my god, this place is gorgeous. I can’t wait to get flying so I can take pictures from overhead or at better angles. Azeroth just keeps getting more beautiful. Is it because she is now dying and her essence is being leaked out into the world?

Keeping this one short and sweet because the pictures speak for themselves imho.

Topic 36: Farewell to Legion

Wow it has been a while for one of these. I was checking every couple of weeks so am super happy.  The end of xpac lull always makes it difficult to find things to write about so I am super happy I have at least 1 post for the moment, and fingers crossed other blogs to read it on.

_____________________________________________________________________

Part 1 – What were your top 3 moments in Legion?

This could be anything! We want you to take a moment to look back and think about what it was that made Legion a great expansion for you? Did you achieve something in game for the first time during Legion? Was there a quest line or NPC or zone that you absolutely fell in love with? Or was there a piece of music or a mechanic that you fell in love with. Share your favourites in this topic 🙂

Part 2 – What are you most looking forward to about Battle for Azeroth?

For this one, it’s time to look forward. Whether you’re Horde or Alliance, there is much to look forward to in the new expansion. This topic isn’t necessarily focused on zones or NPCs that you’re looking forward to seeing (though that, of course, absolutely counts and of course feel free to write about these!) but maybe it’s something more than that. Are there some goals that you’re wanting to achieve now that a new expansion is on the horizon? Are there changes coming to your class that you are really excited about?

______________________________________________________________

Part 1 – Top 3 moments in Legion

Definitely tanking. Just being the tank has been an amazing experience and one I do not want to give up.  If only my guild could change their raid days, it would make me super happy as I would be able to keep tanking.  I am actually really devastated I won’t be going into the next xpac raiding with them.  I hadn’t anticipated how much I would enjoy it.

I plan on tanking mythics still and my druid is likely to still be my main, so I will still get to see my purple bear 🙂

Ahead of the curve would be second. But that goes with the first 😀

Third would be getting the puzzle mounts – yes I know, I didn’t have to actually solve the puzzles entirely but I managed to get quite a few this xpac and I really enjoyed the running around with friends part of getting them.

Part 2 – What are you most looking forward to about Battle for Azeroth?

Levelling toons again. I really enjoy levelling and questing through content for the first 3-4 toons. I can just tune out, read what I need, farm the things . You can just be roaming around and dying because you forget you are not max level anymore and grabbing packs is not the smart way to get anything done 😀

I like seeing the new areas, appreciating the artwork. I take way too many screenshots at the start of the xpac because everything is so pretty and new and shiny!

I can’t ever seem to make it to the 5th toon. I wonder if that is because I don’t like the class as I generally level my fav 4 first.  Mage, Druid, Paladin, Warrior – then whatever I have next level highest.  I am stuck this xpac though as everything is still stuck at Drainor and I just can’t bring myself to get through it.  I might save up for my birthday and by myself some character boosts!  LOL

Shared: Topic 35: Your most badass moment in game

LOL

We have long been the heroes of our own stories in World of Warcraft. NPCs, both minor and major alike, remind us constantly that we are the saviours of Azeroth; that if it weren’t for us, the world would have ended if we hadn’t have defeated that boss, or killed that pest, or scooped up that poop. We are the stars.

For our latest topic, though, we want to talk about you, the player, and ask you:

When have you felt totally badass in game?

Did you kill a super hard boss that you’d been working on for a really long time? Did you have a near miss, and saved yourself from falling to your death? Was there an outfit your transmogged that made you feel super strong and powerful? Or did you do something for someone in game that made you feel great? Let us know! This topic is all about the things that make you feel good in game.

Coincidentally this happened only a few weeks ago.

But i can’t decide between the two events so I am going to tell you about both.

The first is when myself and Michael managed to down the last boss in mythic SoT from 40%. When we were doing it – if you listen to the video, I was sure I would die pretty quickly because of the increasing debuff. But what happened was I kept my cool, hit my defensive before the crap, hit my heal afterward and just kept moving the boss around.

I didn’t panic, i just did my thing. I doubt I could replicate it if I tried. I was just expecting a massive hit to happen that would wipe me out. I felt pretty amazing as a tank to be honest.

The second event was completing Heroic Argus and getting the ahead of the curve achievement. I still feel pretty amazing every time I remember that I helped tank our way through the content. The guild was already half way through Heroic when I started so I really only did 50% of it. But it feels nice to know I contributed. I felt pretty badass.

Of course all of this means nothing though because I was told that tanking on a druid is like winning gold in the special olympics because it isn’t how I tank but everything else making it easy. (Save the disability rage btw – it was a stupid comment by a colleague and I am fully aware!). So now I feel a little like my gorgeous flexing biceps are deflated balloons. I also wasn’t there for the night the guild cleared heroic in one shot AND killed Coven for the first time – maybe I hold them back more then help!

Cest la vie right?

I started out feeling awesome – so let me just remember the good times!!

Shared: Topic 33 – Build your own achievement.

Been a long time since i have done one of these and am happy to be getting back into the Blogosphere. I have missed the community external to WoW and I am hoping to jump back in and see what is around. But let’s start with something nice and easy 😀 A topic I have no idea about :p

Welcome to topic 33 of Z and Cinder’s Blog challenge! Thanks to those who have liked and shared these posts. Remember, if you have a topic you would like to suggest as a challenge, please let us know!

Whether you’re a casual achievement hunter, or a dedicated “must have them all” achievement hunting superstar, there’s no denying the satisfaction felt when that achievement ding sounds. But is there something missing from WoW?

For our latest challenge topic, we want to know:

If you could add an achievement to World of Warcraft, what would it be and how would someone achieve it?
Maybe you’ve felt there’s an obvious achievement that should be in game already. Or maybe you want to create an intricate quest line for people to get a special reward at the end. We want to know!

For me the really obvious one here was class mounts. I would have liked a class mount achievement saying that I had it. Some were a lot of work to obtain and whilst I get the mount itself is the “WOO Factor” I was a little disappointed there was no achievement flash. Unless there is one for getting all the mounts on every class? Which I won’t get since I still don’t have every class maxxed out and am unlikely to do so for a long time, if ever.

I feel this is especially important for people who had really crappy class mounts <cough>  mages  <cough>   so we could at least feel we got something for the effort of killing hardish elementals.

This still makes me angry every time I look at it.

Or even Druids who get a different flight form but no real choice in the matter, what if I liked the old form better? Why no running form because I can’t use my class mount on Antorus it just seems like a waste.

They built up these mounts as well for months and each is so unique, I don’t understand why they didn’t give you an achievement for it. The storylines for them are all amazing as well. So much work went into them and then…you get it and you have a little scene and that is it. No reminder of the moment.
