Cooking in Azeroth

I hadn’t realised how long it was since I posted and in fact even played WoW.  I have been neglecting the second love of my life horribly.  Hopefully this post about the third love of my life will make up for it somewhat.

My usual New years tradition (has been for the last 6 years) has been to LAN with some friends and play WoW until the wee hours of the morning.  We normally chase dungeon/raid achievements for mounts etc which is a lot of fun.  This year our usual gathering was not possible so we offered it to another group of friends we played with.  IN the end the thought of having to unpack PCs etc was so unappealing they decided to just come over and play tabletop instead.

We played quite a few different games over the course of the night and had an absolute blast.  It was nice to chill out, have some drinks and just relax. It did feel weird not being in game though, even if we did get to see real fireworks in my local area instead of ingame ones!

What does any of this have to do with cooking you say? Of course having Azerothian friends I had to make something from the cookbook!

Beer-basted Boar Ribs.  Oh hell yes.  I would make the every weekend if I had the time.

**DROOOOOOL**

They were not hard to make, but it is time consuming as you need to baste the ribs every 30 minutes. You make the sauce first which I wasn’t sure would be enough:

and then begin to cover the ribs evenly.  This was the first acting they received, as you can see the sauce is quite thick.

After 3 hours I can honestly say, these are gorgeous. Stunning.  The droves of Ironforge really knew what they were doing when they created this recipe.

The end product looks like something straight from heaven.  We had a couple left over the next day which we had for lunch and whilst they were just as nice flavours the next day, reheating in the microwave game them a slightly rubbery texture (as expected).  I would suggest you eat them all immediately when out of the oven.  Just keep shoving them in until you have finished them!  You will not regret it. Much.

Legendaries

This is why I don’t log in anymore and why Overwatch is getting my affections WoW!! This!!

I have levelled a few toons to max now and I even did a few emmisary hand in ons each of them. Not a lot granted – I have been slack on that front. But some – certainly more than 1 at any rate.

Lominari gets his priest to max, barely spends any more time on him, logs on randomly  with me the other day and does an emmisary quest hand in – BAM!  Legendary!

And not only that – but it was a useful one!  You could not imagine the shade of green I turned! Here i am helping him get geared so we can do some LFR and the guy gets a legendary on his first quest hand in.

Look at that lovely little beast. Grats honey!

Azerothian cooking

I had some friends over tonight to play some D&D, a campaign in fact that Lominari had created especially for the holiday season in which we had to defeat….KRAMPUS!!

It was a great story for his first time writing a campaign. It was funny because he had the absolute worst rolls the entire time – so bad in fact that only 1 of our party took 3 points of damage (2 were a buff as well). Krampus had so much health that the 4 of us added together still would have only had half it health pool! We rocked it!!

Anyway because we all play WoW i decided to try out some of the recipes in my cook book.  I made a few of the sides so there was some variety.

I started with the Wild rice cakes. Everyone loved them; I felt i used too much flour but I will try them again later and see if that was indeed the case.

This is the mixture before cooking. I made so much extra rice by accident that We might be eating it for a couple of days.

I also made the “sauteed carrots” from Pandaria. These were so delicious.

The picture above has the “zanga caps” as well. I cannot truly explain how yummy the mushrooms are, they would work well with steak or any roast or, well, jus about anything else! I have a small amount left over and plan to have some with bacon in the morning.  You can also see the cooked wild rice cakes in the image below.

For dessert I made “Dalaran brownies”.

I had to make these with Gluten free flour so I have no idea what they would be like with normal flour; but these were amazing. Dense, chocolatey, soft and fudgey.

The glaze was so good that one of my guests ended up licking the plate clean of the excess.

This was just at the beginning of the licking. It was pretty much empty by the end of the night.

So of the 4 recipes i made from the book tonight – all four were well received by my guests. The mushrooms seemed to be the most favoured by the majority but it was a slim margin on the others.

I really enjoyed cooking these recipes and it has made me want to try out other ones that are not in it 🙂 Maybe I can help with a volume 2?

Upgrading the beast

Sadly my computer has now seen better days.  The last time we did anything to them was 5 years ago – actually closer to 6 now and this means, in terms of technology, they are getting a little long in the teeth.

We initially upgraded Lominaris completely because it was having an issue with just randomly shutting down after about 10 minutes of game time.  Mine was ok though.  I can seem to play WoW for about an hour before it gets too much and just shuts down.  This issue seems to have been made worse by the purchase of Overwatch,

Overwatch allows me to get into the game, pick a toon, get into the skirmish run around for the 2 minutes it takes to get into an actual match and through the countdown timer for the start.  Once the gates open though – BAM shut down!  I can maybe run to the actual defense point but I can’t last more than about 3 minutes. It then seems to take about 10 minutes for my pc to fully load up and the minute I get back into a game I am out again. It is so frustrating!!

So after figuring mine was ok to run a few months longer we were denied!!  Such a shame.

Anyway, I am hoping to have my pc upgrade started tonight (I have to switch the CPU today) and then re-installing all 30Gb of game files. {sarcasm} Joy.  Then I will be back online finally.

Post Pax Blues

Lominari and I have been attending PAX every year since 2014  We missed the first event in 2013 sadly.  I enjoy the weekend more than I should as it is an awesome time to catch up with friends and be invested in something where other people have similar interests to yourself.

I always find the crowds manageable and given the size of the venue I don’t ever feel like I am getting bumped/pushed etc, all the anxious types attending an event must allow for personal space awareness!  It is actually quite good.

I tried my first VR this year as well and as I keep saying if they ever made WoW into a VR I would quit my job and just go on the dole and do nothing but play it.  I couldn’t imagine anything better.  VR is a long way off that though but wouldn’t it be grand 🙂  Especially if it was on one of those walking machines as well – although I watched some poor guy struggle to even stand up in it so I am not sure I am co-ordinated enough for that myself.

This is a short clip of me doing VR with a little archery game – so cute and much better than I was expecting VR to feel.  I didn’t have any nausea issues with this game either.

We also gave Overwatch a try at PAX as the “Omen by HP” people had it running on their laptops. Funny story, about 2 minutes after we sat down at the laptop, one of the stand people advised us to just keep playing as they would be filming us on the laptops and since they needed footage we just had to keep playing until they told us to stop.  I think we ended up playing for about 40 minutes – if not an hour and just before we left we got given a huge mousemat each by Steelseries.  It was pretty awesome.  We went home and then bought Overwatch straight away we enjoyed it that much. So if any of you guys play, let me know as we would love to have more people to play with.

overwatchThe only other game we played was Dawn of War 3 – it was so stunningly beautiful graphics wise and I managed to fail the mission.  However whenever I play that style game, I always feel I should play Starcraft.  They do have a free trial for Starcraft where you get almost the full version so I might download that at some point and give it a chance.

We also upgraded our computer chairs from the awful ones we had previously.  Whilst my chair wasn’t entirely bad, it wouldn’t lift up any more, Lominari’s chair was so bad it had lost all it’s faux leather covering and was leaning to the side slightly.  I can’t imagine it was comfortable for him.  But have a look at these beauties.  They are so comfortable to sit in, they have adjustable armrests and you can almost lie flat in them, thanks to ZQ Racing who were having a 50% off sale making them still bloody expensive so they better be good quality and last.

Lominaris chair is on the right of the picture and mine is the left. We both picked blue by chance and got slightly different shades which is kind of nice. I spent last night doing a uni assignment and it was so comfortable!

The only other exciting thing about PAX I need to mention is my Pin collection!  I got hooked at my first PAX and spend far too much money on these little buggers, but I love it!  This year I went to Lowes and bought a cheap vest to pin them all on.  I also ordered secure backs but they didn’t arrive in time, of course they arrived the Tuesday after PAX 🙂

pinny-arcadeThis was my pinned vest prior to PAX (I am yet to add all my new pins to it). I managed to have a couple lose their backs but stay in my vest, which I was very happy about, however I seem to be missing a few pins that I have marked off in my app, so I think I have another lanyard hiding in the house  it could be anywhere.  That is my next quest – to locate the lost pins.  A few people were asking me about my profile on pinnypals.com website when I was trading and I advised whilst I was on there I never used it, but given the popularity of it (some people had bags/T-shirts/flyers etc) I think I will start making an effort.

As you can see – I have nowhere near a complete collection but I only get to go to 1 pax a year and not all of them. I am happy with my collection though 🙂

pinnypals

I also have a friend in the US who is going to send me pins they have lying around and I am super excited about that as any duplicates I get I can trade. The biggest shout out to my Sydney friends though because after coming back to our place on Sunday night for food and Blizzcon videos they left their pins strategically placed under a book for me so I could have 2 more early bird pins for trading.  I will give super squishy hugs when I see them next!  This combined with the pins Chapooke got for me earlier in the year (with my spectacular Red Whelping plushy) I am feeling completely inundated with pinny trading love!  I cannot thank my friends enough for helping with my obsession.

Real life Azerothian cooking

I recently invested in the Warcraft cookbook, i was waiting for the next time we ordered from Amazon to add it into the cart.

I am pretty impressed with the selection of recipes and the layouts, including the mini levelling details and images.

What I honestly like most about it, is they created groupings of spices like Northern Spices or Panderan Spices. So in the recipe you add some of the mix. As someone who loves cooking this just adds to the experience as you really feel you are using something from the game.

My plan is to buy some spice jars so I can add stickers to them with warcraft named labels! GAH! Perfection!

I am yet to cook anything from it but I have a couple of recipes bookmarked for use soon! Maybe even this weekend if I can manage it 🙂

So where is everyone?

Well over our last break from WoW, we have taken up a lot of stuff that limits our availability.  The upside of this is that raiding is not something we think we will be able to commit to on a serious note, which means I can actually have my characters spread around the place and not feel guilty.

So I have a max DH and Druid on Alliance Aman’thul playing with real life friends over there.  I also have moved my max mage to be on Khaz’garoth Horde side to be with my RL friends that started out as guildies in vanilla.  My plan is to max my paladin next on Saurfang Horde to remain in Frostwolves and my friends there.

None of them are even heroic ready, my DH has the highest ilevel at 811 I think?

I moved my mage to Khaz as I didn’t want to play a second druid if I did any runs with them and I would feel bad if I wasn’t playing my mage in some capacity.  Hubby boosted a priest which he is levelling at the moment and is currently 105.

I am playing my mage a bit at the moment, and haven’t logged onto my druid for a couple of days – the guilt is starting to build now!

Have you ever

been so amazed to see this blog activated again?!?!

There isn’t much here as yet, obviously, but it should fill out over the next couple of days if all goes well.
