I am a pet snob!

I really need to do some reading about pet battles, because I discovered today you can tell what rarity the creatures are when battling them.  Yes, I am clearly a very observant person :p  I though that was an unknown until you actually captured them. After that discovery whilst killing a rare creature, I didn’t make the mistake again:

A mountain cottontail did it for me :)  Cute little evil bunnies!! and then i also got :

I tried, I really did try to do some today on my mage, but the leveling process is simply so boring.  I would much rather they had an arena area where you could go to level quickly with the pets.  I don’t mind doing the hard slog, what I don’t like it having to fly around so much and and be inefficient in my leveling.  I am sure I will have a max level by the time WoD comes out, but I really wouldn’t hold your breathe for it!!

However I did do more collecting and battling whilst leveling a lowbie toon, it seems to be much easier to do whilst leveling in an area, you spent 2 seconds doing a battle between places, well that’s what I have been doing.  I noticed however somewhere between disliking pet battles and collecting them like crazy – I became a collecting snob!!  If it isn’t rare I am not collecting it.  I was collecting one green one to just add to the collection in some cases after attempting battles many times with common/grey levels, but as a general rule I kept battling them until I got the rare.  My panda got a Tiny Harvester and a mouse, I was chasing a prairie dog and sand crab and snake – but couldn’t get a rare :(

This led me to go slightly crazy and I have even downloaded PetTracker, which shows you the pets on your world map that you need to collect, where to collect etc.  I think I went crazy for collecting….and not so much for the actual battling…but that will need to happen if I am to collect anything past level 6.  uh-oh!!  It adds the below to your objectives, so when you change zones it tells you what animals you need to collect in the area, when you select the animal it opens your pet journal up so you can see all the details about it.

WoWScrnShot_022314_043918It is also pretty cool, because it lists what pets you have in an area with their respective quality, so when you go to a new area and see the list change, you can spend some time trying to get higher level animals if you want.

Those animals are then shown on your world map and you can mouse over to see what is where.  This has made it much more fun for me now!

I wish I had something that told me what order I collected the pets in…a date of collection even would be cool.

Knowing what quality you have makes all the difference in the wild. I tend to do the same thing (time and patience permitting) although if it’s a new or rarer pet, I’ll usually just tame whatever I can get and stone or look for a better one later.

I haven’t used that addon you mentioned but I use a few others which I find very helpful – PetJournal Enhanced, PetBattle Teams and Battle Pet BreedID

That’s essentially what I have been doing, I will do a couple of battles then if I haven’t scored a rare, I just capture it so I can say I have it. I haven’t even started collecting stones or anything yet, but I should probably start doing the dailies so I can get the goodies. I might check out the mods you have mentioned though – thanks!

I also use an addon called Pet Battle Quality Glow which tells me what quality pets I’m battling against. In terms of breeds I wrote a guide on WoWHead which may help as well. The Anubisath Idol is another strong choice to use for powerlevelling pets.

After a quick look at the pets you have I’d like to make a little suggestion. Take your Lil’ X.T., Lil’ Ragnaros and Strand Crawler and make that the team to get to 25 first. With those 3 you should never lose a battle in the wild. Throughout your pet leveling process the Strand Crab will be able to solo most of what you come up against.

Also, level one of your Terrible Turnips as you go. He is WONDERFUL to use for capturing low level rares because of his one ability/hit that will not take an opponent below 1 health.

The three addons Cymre mentions are fabulous. You can also go to http://petsear.ch/Info to read up on Breed I.D.s…the site will help you understand why the Battle Pet BreedID addon is soooo good….plus that site is just as fabulous!

If you do decide to level the three I’ve suggested above, go to the mage tower area of stormwind and level them there. There are a bunch of squirrels and bunnies with very fast respawn rates in that area. It won’t take you much time at all to get them to level 3 or 4 so that you can then take them out into the wilds.

I have been sort of leveling about 9 pets in concert, so when one hits the next level, I switch it for whatever needs to be given the next level. I was hoping to have a whole army level together… :)

My issue i that once i get 3 done, I then have to go back and do it all again with the next lot right? Or is there some trick I am yet to discover? I will grab the three you have suggested as well though and add them into my rotation :p

In my eyes, getting one strong team to 25 first is the best route. Yes, it means you will have to go back to capture/level other pets afterwards, but it will make that process much easier in the long run. You can capture pets along the way as you level a set team to help eliminate some work of having to go back. Also, you will get a pet (or three) to 25 faster than you would by leveling many at the same time. Also, as you go, make sure to battle the master tamers. Once you beat them all you will open them up as dailies..which are WONDERFUL for going back and leveling baby pets. I can take 2 baby pets and level them from 1-20ish by battling the dailies on Eastern Kingdoms, Outland and 3-4 in Pandaria…all in about an hour…and make 300+ gold in the process.

OK, I am going to trust you on your theory! I will have a play tonight and see how I go with the three you have mentioned, you better not be leading me up the garden path.

I didn’t realise you had to beat all the trainers to open the dailies, that explains why I couldn’t do any :p OK, now I have a strat, I am a little more excited :p
